Getting Started With Web Hosting

Assess Your Needs and Web Goals
Building a web presence is easy and includes a few important steps to consider:

  1. Establish a Purpose for Your Website.
  2. Determine Size and Type of Content.
  3. Figure Out How You Will Design Your Site.
  4. Choose a Domain Name.
  5. Order Web Hosting.
  6. Market Your Website.

Continue reading for more information about each one of these steps.

Purpose
As you get started on the web, it's important to ask yourself, "What do I want people to get out of my website?" Try to narrow your answer down to 3 goals or less. The more focused your site is, the more successful it will be.

Size and Content
Most websites can be classified into sizes: small, medium, or large.

Small websites usually have more static content and contain only html files and images. Most personal, family, and some business sites are categorized as a small website. A business or organization website would fit in this category if the goal is to have email addresses and a basic online presence, or brochure-type website. A small website would have 4 or 5 main areas in the navigation and wouldn’t usually have sub menus or a very complex site map. Some scripting languages such as PHP and ASP may be used within a small site. NetFronts recommends a Linux Bronze or Windows Bronze for sites that are just getting started. View plans

Medium websites are usually more dynamic and interactive, which involves more extensive scripting. Websites in this category may use a complex data structure like MySQL and will generally use a larger amount of disk space for file storage. A website that offers ordering and secure credit card transmission usually starts at the medium website range. NetFronts recommends starting with a Linux Silver plan or Windows Silver plan for medium-size websites. View Linux plans or Windows plans.

Large websites make full use of dynamic content and most of the individual pages within the site are generated from scripts or a database. A large website will probably need a great deal of disk space for a large number of images, high resolution images, video files, etc. The amount of visitors to a large site would be very high. NetFronts recommends starting with a Linux Gold plan or Windows Gold plan for larger websites. View Linux plans or Windows plans.
